The Presidential House is still used as the official residence of Panama`s President. It is a beautiful 3-story structure that exemplifies Spanish Colonial architecture, as well as the Moorish Andalucian style so popularized by Old Spain. The Presidential House was first built in 1673 and is located on Avenida Eloy Alfaro, in the Casco Viejo district of Panama City. The building is nicknamed the Palacio de las Garzas after the stunning white herons that walk its grounds. The first birds were given to President Belisario Borras from the Poet Ricardo Miro and new pairs continue to establish residency year after year. Being that it is still in use by the government, tours of the Presidential House are only available on Sundays. It`s recommended you book ahead. Tours can be made a block away at the Casa Amarilla ("Yellow House"). | | | Looking for a cigar factory close to Panama City? I highly recommend you go to La Pintada, a small town about 20 minutes from Cocle, Penonome. It`s a couple hour`s drive from Panama City, but well worth it. There`s a great cigar rolling factory there and the drive from Penonome to La Pintada is extremely well-maintained. There used to be three cigar factories, but only one has stayed in business. Most of Panama`s tobacco is grown in the Chiriqui Province, near the Panamanian border with Costa Rica. The rich earth has been producing some of the finest Cuban-seed tobacco in the world. You can get about 25 cigars for $10 in La Pintada and they are wonderful, high-grade cigars - less of a kick than Nicaraguan cigars, but a great smooth flavor. If you choose to forgo the factory experience, there`s a store in Penonome called "Costa" where a box of 25 is $80. And if you`re looking for other cigars to bring home, check out Bodega Mi Amiga on Avenida Porras in Panama City. It`s a liquor store, but they have a fine selection of national cigars. Some of my favorites include Joyas de Panama and Oro de Panama - both are long filler cigars, wrapped in Sumatra leaves grown in Nicaragua. | | | What are some good birding sites on Panama’s Pacific?? The Azuero Peninsula`s got great bird watching%u2014sites are accessible and have high variety. The Las Macanas marsh should definitely be on your list of sites. It`s only about a 20-minute drive off the Pan-American, located in Herrera. Las Macanas also has a watch tower, making great pictures a cinch. There, you`ll be able to see kites, falcons, a wide variety of ducks, and ferruginous pygmy-owls. The Cerro Hoya National Park is known for having three Panama endemics: the Painted Azuero Parakeet, the Veraguas Mango and the Brown-backed Dove. Being that you`ll probably be flying into Panama City, and depending on how long your stay is and what type of vehicle, you might want to try and make a stop at the El Cope National Park. For easy sightings and good photo ops, the bird pond in Pocrí, just outside Pedasí, is always haunted by a good variety of birds. |
