| ![]() Powered by | ![]() Q. How do i get free flight upgrade to business class with b.a? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Q. How do you get a free upgrade from tourist to business class on a plane? we're traveling to europe and i would like to be able to have a little more room on the flight.
"Since the airline is not awllowed to serve economy meals in business class..."
dress nicely and most important- don't order a special meal (like vegetarian) since the airline is not awllowed to serve economy meals in business class.
wait for days when the plane is usually packed and don't arrive that early at the airport as at the beginning of the check-in there might be no need for upgrades.
apply for the airline's frequent flyer program because members have as well a better chance to get upgraded.
but i think united airlines offers a kind of an upgrade possibility at the gate: they had seats in economy plus (section with more legroom) left and offered an upgrade for about $70. this was on a flight from washington to frankfurt- i don't know about domestic ones.
the most easiest way might be: just ask!!! nice of course. don't tell them stories because they get to hear them everyday. and we get sick of this!!!
check seatguru.com and try to find out where the emergency exits are located and if you are qualify (no broken leg of course and be able to help- at least theoretically...) then you might consider to sit there. although you have legroom it might become a bit cool during the flight.
don't you know someone that is working for an airline??? getting an upgrade this way might be easy as well...

Q. How to be upgraded to business class? i m travelling a lot, and i m never upgraded to business class, even when there are free seats in the plane. even with a gold member subscription card ( air france / klm ) , i wasn't very lucky.
is anyone know how to optimize the chance to be upgraded to business class in long-flight ?
"Use your frequent flyer points for the upgrade or if upgrade seats quota are..."
To increase your chances of getting upgraded, try to find out the type of ticket that the airline considers capable of being upgraded (not all economy type fares are upgradeable). After booking and paying for the tickets, make your intention known THAT YOU WANT TO USE YOUR FREQUENT FLYER POINTS FOR THE UPGRADE or if upgrade seats quota are not available at that time, signify to the a/l that you want to be WAITLISTED for an upgrade. Pls. be aware that there are a set number of seats that airlines will only allow for upgrades. Once those number of seats are reached, the airline will usually continue the flight even if those seats are empty. The airline's Revenue Management takes care of decisions like that, and not the ground staff of that particular airline.

Q. Has anyone flown business class air tran to vegas from either milwaukee or atlanta? this is a bit long read if you have time: do you think that we'd be able to get a business class seat if we don't buy it way ahead of time but just try to upgrade exactly 24 hours online (air tran's rule) before the flight takes off. this is my problem. we received two free tickets for a trip and we have to fly air tran, but my husband is sort of a bigger guy, (think football player type) and we need a bigger seat for him. i hate for him to have to squeeze into those tiny air tran coach seats.
anyway i've seen business class on air tran and that would work fine and we could enjoy a trip to vegas then. but the tickets are only good for coach and then the only thing we can do is buy the upgrade to business class for about $99 each way which we can afford. (note: but we can't afford an entire new ticket in business class since that's 1,000 bucks and they won't let us use our coach ticket towards the more expensive business class ticket.)
anyway the people on the 800 line said the only way to do it is to wait till 24 hours before the flights to try to get a 99 dollar ugrade to business class online but it is "first come first serve" and if people pre-paid for the expensive business class seats at $1,000 the 12 seats could be sold out totally i guess too, sooooo,,,,
now i'm worried we'll have this huge trip planned , hotels etc.,and at the last day before have to cancel it and lose my free tickets since my husband might not fit in the little seats and they might force us to pay for an entire last minute extra seat for my husband which we couldn't really afford at $500 coach either, and business class would be sold out.
so my real question is: how likely do you think a flight from milwaukee to vegas or atlanta to vegas (or vegas to atlanta, or vegas to milwaukee back again) would be sold out prior to the 24 hour restriction? the agents said there's no way to really know, but that usually business class people know it's cheaper to just wait to the 24 hours before and then do it online. what do you think from all your business traveling.thanks if you know....
also is there a time of week or a certain month that a flight most likely wouldn't be full compared to other times or months to vegas? or nowadays are almost all flights filled to the max to vegas?
allukcat, thanks so much!!!!
I searched on this site and got the Cheapest Flight, check it out,it also had Discount Coupon Codes for expedia, orbitz, travelocity, priceline, etc.

Q. Is a free upgrade on a flight possible if you are disabled? hi
i am travelling to paris in december from australia with a stopover in singapore and have a bad leg and i am on crutches. i just wanted to know if anyone thinks its possible to get a upgrade to business class as i need extra room. i wanted to fly business but i just cant afford it. any tips or ideas would be great.
thanks
jess
"You can try for an upgrade but you certainly won't get put..."
You can try for an upgrade but you certainly won't get put into the exit rows - these seats are for able bodied people only. Hence the reason you are unlikely to get children or elderly people in those seats either.
December is also a busy time - otherwise the airline would possibly 'blocking' a seat (eg so you could have one seat next to you free).
btw in case you weren't aware - the seats i am talking about are the bulkhead seats.
You really should contact your airline directly.

Q. What are the chances of getting a free or cheap upgrade on my flight? i'm going on holiday to mauritius at the end of november and will be travelling on air mauritius and was wonderin what the chances are of getting a free or cheap upgrade to either business or first class. if i have to dress smartly, how smart? and if they do charge for the upgrade, how much is it likely to be? thank you.
Unless you have elite status in their or one of their partners' frequent flyer programs (and if you did, you probably wouldn't be asking) I would say the chances are close to nil.

Q. How can i get a free flight upgrade? i frequently travel on very long distance flights and i cannot afford a higher class than economy. i have heard occasionally of some people being given a free upgrade to business class when they arrive at the airport, or at some stage before boarding the plane.
apparently it is common practice for most airlines to accept more bookings in economy class than the seats they actually have, to compensate for the fact that a few passengers always fail to show up.
presumably therefore, the reason they sometimes give a few lucky people a free upgrade is that everyone showed up and they don't have enough seats in economy for them, but business or first class are not fully booked.
my question is, are the free upgrades just given away randomly, or is there something i could do to increase my chances?
this is a serious question so no joke answers please! i am travelling from australia to england in may and could do with a comfortable flight if possible.
"Of times i did ask for an upgrade when i checked in and did..."
You would have to be the frequent flyer with the most miles to be upgraded when economy class is full and there is room in 1st or business class. Unless someone offers to pay for the upgrade, most airlines will then give complimentary upgrades to their best frequent flyer customers and I never knew if I was going to get the upgrade until a few minutes before the flight departed.
I flew from the US to Asia at least six times a year for over seven years, and often received free upgrades, probaby at least seven or eight times. I would never know until I got to the gate and handed them my my boarding pass, the electronic ticket machine would then beep and reject my ticket and the gate agent would then hand me my upgraded boarding pass, and I never once had to pay or use miles to get the upgrade. Only once was I given a free upgrade at check in when economy class was already full and I got to the airport very late for the flight.
You can ask at check in whether it's possible to upgrade, but in those cases you will have to use frequent flyer miles or pay for the upgrade and if there are other ff flyers with more elite status than you, they will be given priority. A couple of times I did ask for an upgrade when I checked in and did have to pay for the upgrades and both times I was told I was the person who requested the upgrade with the highest elite status and the most miles of anyone that asked.
From my experiences, you won't know until you get to the gate if you are lucky enough to get a free upgrade, and if there are people willing to pay or use ff miles, you're chances are not nearly as good.

Q. Is it ok to you, for a coach-class to sit in an empty 1st class seat at no charge? this is also posted in the "travel/air travel" category!
say you paid a premium price (like $2500) for a 1st class airline ticket and there are several unoccupied 1st class seats left over.
so, after take-off, a coach-class passenger decides to upgrade himself to one of the empty 1st class seats (since nobody is sitting there and the plane is already in the air).
is this ok with you, as a paying 1st class passenger?
or, should maybe the airlines incorporate a new policy, to give "free" upgrades to coach class passengers on any flight, for every "unsold" 1st class seat, once the plane has taken off?
especially, if the 1st class seats are already empty and the flight is already in flight?
how do you think this would this impact 1st class sales to airlines? and should the airlines maybe do away with 1st class/business class altogether....just have one class....coach?
i know people that say, if they had paid a premium $$ for a 1st class ticket, they still have no problem with coach-class passengers getting free upgrades to 1st class! they look at it like, the coach class people just negotiated a better deal (i.e. free upgrade), that's all!
personally, i have a problem with paying a premium price for 1st class and then someone getting a "free" upgrade for no justifiable reason other than the seat is already empty. if the airline allowed this, i would never buy a 1st class ticket again, who would?
your thoughts!
"They get a free upgrade..."
The only time I ever see the airline let coach class go to first class is when there are empty seats of course, but they usually ask if there are any military persons on board. If someone in the armed forces is there, they get a free upgrade. I think it is a small token of appreciation and I for one, wont b**** about it.

Q. How do i get free upgrades on airline seats? i travel about once a year and always fly coach, but i was wondering how to go about getting a business or first class upgrade without paying the difference? is there a sure-fire technique to this?
"Are in a bad situation and will upgrade you to first for being so..."
Flying only once a year is going to make it pretty difficult to get free upgrades. Plus, it will take a long time to collect enough points to get the upgraded seats. But this would be an option. As someone else said you could also get bumped from the overbooked seats (you have to volunteer for this) Many times they are in a bad situation and will upgrade you to first for being so helpful.
Here is what you could try. When you get to the airport, talk to the person at the front desk where you board the plane. Ask them if they could upgrade your seat for you if the flight isn't full. Sometimes they will do this for you, sometimes they will offer it for only $50 more. It is especially helpful if you are celebrating something like a Wedding, Anniversary, etc.
The other thing you could try is once you get on the plane. If you see some first class seats are empty, you could ask the flight attendant if you could move up, this is usually the most likely way for them to let you move seats.
Just remember, sometimes it is really hard to get the upgrade. As the others said, they will usually upgrade frequent fliers first. Plus, they often won't let anyone move up because the people in first class have paid the additonal money to sit there, so they will keep the seat emepty. It all just depends on the day and the mood of the person you ask. Most times they will ask the person to see if it is okay. One other thing, just because the seat is empty, it doesn't mean that it is open for you to move up. A lot of times people in first class will buy two seats so they have more room.
Hope this helps!
