It`s true, the
Darien has wonderful species, including quetzals and harpy eagles. The Pan-American Highway stops short of this
National Park and does not go through to Colombia. Most birders in this area use riverboats and horses to get around, but if you`re thinking of going here, it`s
best to do so in the
dry season.
Centered in the Darien National Park is Cana Valley, easily one of Central America`s top birding destinations. Contact Ancon Expeditions of Panama for
Cana field station lodging. There`s also Rancho Frio, with royal flycatchers and laughing falconsyou can get there on foot (5 hrs) or with guides and horses from El Real. Cerro Pirre, accessed by two trails from Rancho Frio, is recommended only with guides, usually Embera People.
