Q. How much money should an american have to retire in latin america?
especially for the countries of mexico, colombia, panama and niceragua. i can also invest some of the money online in the stock market to have a little extra income.

"The condo cost about $us 60,000.00 our monthly condo fees age about $us 60.00..."

I live in Latin America. Generally the cost of living is much cheaper here, but depending on where you decide to live will dictate how stable the economy is. I currently live in Santiago de Chile (population: 6 million/Mediterranean climate). It's about 90 minutes to the beach and about 90 minutes to skiing in the Andes. Chile has the best and most stable economy in Latin America. I own a 3-bedroom/2-bathroom condo (60 sq. metres), with swimming pool, near the downtown and close to (5 minute walk) two metro stations (Universidad Católica/Santa Isabel). The condo cost about $US 60,000.00 Our monthly condo fees age about $US 60.00. Our annual property tax is about $US 200.00 The things which are more expensive than in North America are: electronic goods (computers, cameras, gaming systems, etc), gasoline (but it's easy to vehicles with Diesel motors) and books (especially in English).

This answer closely relates to:

Q. Tax haven and how money is recognized.?
lets say u live in the us. you open a offshore account in panama to open up a online business. you make money on the offshore business. will you have to report annually on the income made on the offshore business in the us taxes? or, will the money just keep building up until you withdraw money. if you are from the us and plan to live in the us, the money will be tax at the us tax rate at the time of the withdraw, right? what if you plan to retire in panama, will all the income made be taxfree from the us and taxed at panama rate, right(which is little to no tax on income made in panama)? why do big corporations do this? i dont understand how they have millions in their offshore account and the us doesnt know about it. what will they do with the income made offshore? those funds are still tax at us rates, right? so if u plan to retire in panama, will the money be tax at panama rate which is little to nothing right?

"Corporation establishes a corporation in panama that runs an active business outside..."

If both you and a U.S. corporation establishes a corporation in Panama that runs an active business outside of the United States, it is possible to defer taxes until such time as the money is paid to you or to the U.S. parent corporation. But if the online business is being run in the U.S., (i.e., services are performed in U.S., inventory stored in U.S., customers in the U.S.), the Panamanian corporation pays tax in the U.S. on its profits currently.

This answer closely relates to:

Q. What is the safest city or place to raise a family in panama?
i am getting out of the military(us army) and will be medically retired. i am fairly young with a spouse and 2 young children and would like to move to panama. i have a contract job that will be taking me to afghanistan for a year where i will make a good chunk of money in that year and after i get back would like to take that and my retirement pay to panama but don't know where the best place is for young children but also to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. somewhere that is not real crowded but i would like to buy a boat to enjoy the water and also the wilderness. i know this is alot but any serious answers would help. thanks........ also how are the school systems? is crime a real problem?(i understand their is crime everywhere but is it above normal?)

"American style school you are limited to panama city and perhaps the david/boquete area..."

Except for Colon, Panama is not a dangerous. If you have kids and want an American style school you are limited to Panama City and perhaps the David/Boquete area . It is difficult to think of a place that would meet all of your criteria but you can locate within an hour drive or so of the things you want to enjoy. I would not decide where to live until after you have made a long ( 3-6 week) visit to the country.

Q. Joining the military? now?
i'm thinking, slightly, of a life in the armed forces. let's get some background. 1) i'm an ardent left-wing man, opposed iraq from the time i saw 9/11 and knew (yes, i knew) we'd invade iraq. 2) i do however, support rooting out the taliban and trying to find osama bin laden in afghanistan and pakistan, if they can get their domestic politics under control. (hard to do, i know) 3) my dear dad was in the navy and air force, retiring after at least two decades of service, going to vietnam, honduras and panama among other locales. he advises against me being, in his own words, "cannon fodder" in iraq. 4) i need money for college and i want to do it on my own. i am already two years in my college career and i have had problems with focus and academic discipline. so, the question is, should i enlist? should i apply for a local humint job that looks real nice? (i am smart and i would like to think i have strong computer skills)

"I can't think of a better way to do it then the military..."

I can't really advise you because this is such an important and personal decision. The military requires a lot of dedication and sacrifice. Not just sacrifice of your life but by learning to become a member of your unit you sacrifice your "individuality" in order to learn how to lean on your friends, the other members, so you each would protect each other with your life. This isn't easy but it provides you with an education in trust that you wouldn't be able to acquire any other way. A lot of thought and consideration went into whether to start this war and I guarantee that you will never hear about it in the press we have today. It may not have been the right decision but it was not entered into with as much self-serving shallowness as you have heard. There is too much to cover here but, believe me, there was much more to this decision then you know. Your dad loves you and wants to protect you but each person has to become their own man--or woman. You can only live under your parents shadow for so long, then you have to grow up. And, if you want to learn discipline, I can't think of a better way to do it then the military. Not everyone succeeds in the military but you certainly learn what you've got in you.
