| ![]() Powered by | ![]() Q. Do the suez and panama canals have any impact on world temperature and weather cycles? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Q. Which would be warmer (climate and ocean) for vacation in october? what is the average temp of each? please give average climate and ocean temps...
1. myrtle beach, south carolina
2. savannah, georgia
3, panama city, florida
avarage temp in october. (thought i might clarify, just in case) (-:
panama city is in florida, otherwise known as panama city beach. it is in the gulf of mexico...
panama city and savanah are further south that myrtle beach...
they are all in the us
"I think they are all about the same temp wise..."
i think they are all about the same temp wise, it just depends on what the weather is like at the time (hurricanes or storms coming through) if it was me i would check the weather and decide from there or put all the places in a hat and draw one

Q. In need of a moment's peace/tranquility...any ideas on a cheap beach vacation (specifically panama city beach)? i would like to stay at a hotel on the beach, but it is not necessary. i know i will save money on a hotel not on the beach. what are some money saving tips for a vacation in panama city beach? it will either be just me or maybe one more person. i am having beach withdrawals. lol i have been unemployed for 6 months, and i am just getting back on my feet. i need a vacation more than ever! even for just a couple of days. i have to get out of town for a bit towards this summer. i find comfort and peace in watching the waves, listening to the sound of the ocean, and enjoying the warm sand, etc........... seriously, it's not just leisure, it's very important because i have been having a very hard time, and i will need a vacation. it will be good for my soul.
i know rates are more expensive during peak season. it doesn't matter when i go, i just want it to be a good time to go while the weather and water is still warm. i don't require luxury, but i don't want to stay in a crappy place or make it a rough vacation. any suggestions?
You could stay at sugar sands. It is one of the few small hotels still left around there. I stayed there about 5 years ago and it was very reasonable. It is on the quiet west end of the beach so it is not very crowded. Not fancy by any means, but it was clean.

Q. How warm is florida panhandle weather in october? i've done the research and everything i find says that panama city beach (that's where we're planning to stay) averages around 83 in october with water temps around 77. my question for someone who lives on the panhandle or visits frequently is this... is pcb in mid october warm enough to be in the pool? at 77 the ocean sounds a little cool, but is it usually warm enough to enjoy a "beach" vacation with pool time? we're hoping to vacation during fall break when rates are much cheaper, but don't want to ruin our vacation by it being too cool. thanks for the advice in advance!
"The water will be getting cooler..."
Florida weather can be unpredictable that time of year. Expect temps in the 70's or 80's. If you go further south it'll be warmer. The water will be getting cooler, but you get used to it!

Q. Why do some people claim the oceans are lower now than they were 150 years ago? i've seen this claim made as an attempt to refute global warming. there are good reasons to question global warming and this isn't one of them. the thinking behind it appears to be that is sea levels fall in tasmania then they fall across the globe. why would people think that? it's like saying "it's raining here today therefore it's raining everywhere".
the levels of the seas and oceans are not uniform, hence the locks in the panama canal even though it links two oceans together.
can anybody find any evidence anywhere, anything at all, that even hints at the fact that sea levels are falling?
to mr jello.
thanks for your answer (note i haven't blocked you). it's not slight of hand, you stated that sea levels are falling. any reasonable person would imply that you were refering to global sea levels and not solely to tasmania.
you are talking about oceans being lower now than 150 years ago and so am i - no change of subject there.
if you go back through my answers you'll see that if someone asks 'is all this flooding because of gw?' or 'it's really hot here, is that because of gw?' my answer to these and similar questions is 'no'. the reason being that one flood, one hot place, a hot year, a mark on a harbour wall is meaningless by itself.
gw and cc are about long term trends on a global scale. what happens in one place, one country, one year is of little consequence as it proves nothing. only when long term trends are formed can anything be implied.
i try to be objective, that's why every answer i provide is based on documented facts.
there are other places where sea levels are falling, if i told you where i suspect you would distort the information and use it out of context.
the bottom line is that on a global scale sea levels are rising - that's something no-one can dispute. there are contributory factors other than gw but again, if i mentioned them i believe you'd use the reasons out of context and state or imply that rising sea levels were caused solely by these factors.
to taran wanderer: an excellent answer, very level-headed. we can't make an informed judgement if we're only presented with partial information - very true.
to bob and dana: same thing, informed decisions come from looking at the larger picture and not one sided, selective media articles.
tomcat - good points. the rise in sea levels caused by the last glacial retreat happened during the period 10,500 to 18,000 years ago, since then global average sea level rises were 1mm a year, they're now 3mm a year.
events such as el nino, la nina, cyclonic and anti-cyclonic conditions etc cause uplifting and depressing of the ocean surfaces - they don't add to the volume of water but simply move it around.
stygainwolfe - thanks for your answer. evaluating average sea levels is complicated, it requires a series of measurements to be taken and for all variables other than the sea level to be standardised. satellite telemetry has made th task much easier in recent years.
permaculture b - you're right, just one person (i didn't want to single anyone out).
to be fair to the skeptics, the reason for underwater villas etc is more down to coastal erosion. since roman times sea levels have risen by about 2 metres.
alfratta - water levels do go up and down but there is an inequality between the two. if average sea levels remained constant it would indicate that either a) nothing was happeing or b) opposing factors were in a state of equilibrium.
sea levels change through thermal contraction and expansion, salinity, density and volume. localised changes in these facotrs cause localised variations in the sea level - this is what's happened in some waters around tasmania (the location referenced by mr jello). we would expect a drop in avaerage sea levels and that's just what has been observed - quite normal and predictable.
yet again you have taken things out of context - a drop in sea levels in one place is proof of nothing, similarly a rise or fall in temps in one place would prove nothing. the changes are not locally restricted, they're happening right across the planet. the global average sea level is rising and so too are the temps.
here's another challenge (i note you still have a 0% success rate in responding to my challenges) - find any credible document written at any time by any one that so much as hints at a fall in global sea levels. if it's a reality then there should be thousands of such documents.
once again you've completely distorted what i said about the panama canal, taken it out of context and reinvented what i said. this had nothing at all to do with the mark on the harbour wall and was included to demonstrate that there is a natural variation in sea and ocean levels.
everything i've said can be validated using accepted and documented scientific facts. everything you've said has been invalidated and shown to be inaccurate - and you accuse me of muddying the waters.
i do not support the belief in global warming, but i think you make a rather significant point that most people never ever think about.......i strongly agree with what you are saying, you can't make a claim about the entire world if you have only ever studied one area........i do not think you can make a claim saying that sea levels are falling if you've only recorded level at one place, that is why i hate this stupid war between people who agree that global warming is a threat and those who say it is not....what ever side you are on you cannot make a claim without giving all of the facts, and in this case, hardly any of the actual facts are there. most people who would read an article that argued this point wouldn't even realise that this scientist only studied one area and is making an assumption on the world as a whole...unfortunately, this accusation can be made to both side of this never ending argument and i believe both would be found guilty......

Q. With global warming, will a north west passage become reality? sailing west into hudson's bay the franklin expedition (1840) tried to find a route to the pacific ocean. with global warming could this become a reality sometime in the future? ships from northern europe going to japan and china would save a lot of miles and time by not having to use the panama canal.
Already, ships occasionally go through the passage in high summer, just to show that it can be done.
Here's my question for the Global Warming believers: Do you really think the Arctic will be open in winter? Granted, if the climate moderates a little, there might be breaks in the Canadian Archipelago in summer that ships might squeeze through, but in September it's all going to freeze solid again. That's not going to change!

Q. What was your best day in your life? and where was is it? i had the best day of my life back in 2004. i went to a vacation to panama city beach for spring break with my brother, i was 34 he was 20.
at one night my brother went to the hotel early and i stayed in this nigh club. i drank so many drinks yet i didn't feel bad, the weather was so warm even 3 in the morning...the water, the drinks...everything was perfect. to make it better i talked to this girl that i danced with, i lied to her and said that i had weed. she took me to her car and i said i don't have it, then we talked more...she took me to a pier near water at 4 am...we kissed and did a lot of other things on the pier....it was a perfect day...i mean everything was perfect, the water, the ocean, the warm weather, the food, the drinks, the girl
for someone like me who was born in a crazy country like iran and had moved by himself to germany at 14 and then moved to the u.s. at 20 with a tourist visa and had to work soooo hard to get a business going and go to ucla later on.....i mean that day was like how i imagined the heaven would be like
It wasn't just one day. I was a teenager in the 60's living in England. We had the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the women got the pill so we had the women and nobody had ever heard of herpes or aids. The world can never be that good again.

Q. Why do scientist say polar caps formed by panama canal closing but is melting from global warming? i saw on the discovery channel show saying the polar ice caps formed a few million something years ago when the panama canal was formed from volcanic lava cooling and thus creating a land bridge between north america and south america and it separated the pacific from the atlantic and which caused the oceans to become more stagnant and freeze in place on the south and north pole. could it be that the reopening of the panama canal be causing the ice caps to be melting?
"Continuous section of water from atlantic to pacific..."
No.
You need large-scale ocean currents to move enough water to change global climate like the way you describe. The Panama canal is actually a large lake, with locks at either side so ships can move in and out. This means that there is never a continuous section of water from Atlantic to Pacific .
It would be like trying to make the Niagra Falls using a couple of buckets.

Q. Which has better beaches: gulf of mexico or atlantic? i've been to panama city beach, fl, which is located on the gulf of mexico. however, i have never been to the east coast of florida. are the beaches over there better? i was considering going to the east coast of north carolina or virginia..but i don't know what the beach/weather is like there. is the ocean warmer in the atlantic or the gulf of mexico?
i live in illinois, and i just don't feel like driving all the way to florida! so if the beach/ocean is better in north carolina, virginia, etc, i'd rather go there because it's a shorter drive.
From someone who has lived in florida their whole life and been to every beach around florida, I love both sides! The Gulf side is definitly warmer and if you're into shell hunting go with the Gulf side and the cities along the Gulf are more quaint and small beach towns (Sanibel, Venice, Anna Maria Island ). The Atlantic side is a bit cooler but you get much better waves if you're into surfing or skimboarding and the cities along the Atlantic are more party beach towns (Daytona, Miami, Cocoa Beach ) It's whatever you're into, but the nice thing about florida compared to other states is you have way more variety and there's also lots of other fun things to do in florida...besides disney
