Nicaragua is generally quite safe, especially in the well-traveled areas of Grenada, Leon, Managua and San Juan del Sur. Keep an eye on any advisories of protests in the area, as these can hold up any bus or taxi traffic, and take normal precautions when travelling (don`t flash expensive items, carry around a lot of cash, etc.)

Panama city has some really fun spots in the downtown core and you will find in general as long as you are having fun you won`t draw any unwanted attention. That said there are plenty of opportunists that see foreigners as easy marks to make money. There are poor neighborhoods to be avoided at all costs but there are also nice areas near the ocean like Punta Paitilla, Punta Pacifica and Marbella that you can have a great lifestyle.

Panama`s a great place to visit when the rains aren`t so bad (anytime from November through to around May; that way, if you want to travel around a bit from the capital, you can do so with some ease. Also, if you`re looking for some cultural excitement, go during the country`s annual Carnival, usually celebrated the week before Ash Wednesday.
