Q. What colleges do you think i can get into realilistically? what colleges should i apply to? i go to john burroughs school. a very well known high school to all heads of college admissions. its on of the best liberal arts high schools in the u.s.a.
i played basketball and baseball until tenth grade when i got injured during baseball season. since then i´ve only played golf.
i have a 3.85 gpa unweighted.
i have a 4.21 weighted.
i get a´s in all of my classes except in history. i get b´s and b pluses
i´m a little bit behind schedule because i came to my school in 9th grade and it starts in 7th grade and i had to take the lower track classes to begin with because my previous public school hadn´t prepared me for the rigor of my new school.
so i´m a senior this year. and i´m going to be taking precalculus which is the regular course instead of calculus, the advanced track.
i´m going to be taking spanish 4 honors instead of spanish 5 ap.
i am however taking english 4 ap and biology ap which are the advanced track.
i also plan to start taking french this year. i´m especially interested in learning multiple languages.
i got a national honors mention for my psat score-- 211.
i also have received two gold standard awards in the nse (national spanish exam) for scoring within the top 5 percent of the country.
sat is 2190.
critical reading 670
english 760 with an 8 on the essay
math 760
i´m also co-creator and co-president of the comedy club at my school. my club makes funny videos and skits to present in assembly. last year we raised over 3,000 dollars with tshirt sales and donated all the proceeds to a needy charity.
every spring break i have gone on a school trip.
9th grade year i went to southern missouri and completed 50 hours of community service for needy mothers.
10th grade year i went to panama (the country) to improve my spanish with about 20 other kids from my school. i also did community service down there.
11th grade year i returned to panama and even further improved my spanish.
10th grade summer i worked full time.
this summer i worked full time selling extended service contracts for automobiles over the phone. i sold these in spanish. which i think should look really good for college. i´m ninety percent fluent in spanish. all of which i learned through school and school trips.
i really need financial aid. my family is in no position to pay for me to go to any of the colleges i list, if i don´t receive any financial aid.
so that´s an important thing. if i got into the right school then i could take out college loans obviously, but i´d like to stay away from borrowing huge sums.
one other thing is that i plan to retake the sat in order to try to raise my critical reading score. because its far below my other scores.
soo anyways, some of the colleges i am considering applying to are
1)duke university
2)grinnell college
3) indiana university
4)kenyon college
5)miami university
6)northwestern university
7)tulane university
8)university of florida
9)university of illinois
10)university of iowa
11)university of miami
12)university of michigan
13)university of missouri
14)university of north carolina
15)university of notre dame
16)university of texas- austin
17)university of washington
18)university of wisconsin
19)virginia tech
obviously i´m not going to apply to 19 colleges. i wanted some other people´s (hopefully knowledgable peoples) opinions on not only which colleges i have a good chance of getting into but also from which ones i have a good chance of getting financial aid.
to help you guys out, i´d rather go to a larger public school. but i know that out of state colleges are somtimes hesitant to offer financial aid to out of staters. that´s why i´ve also included smaller private schools in my list.
obviously i have a lot of colleges and no idea which ones to choose. any info would help. any at all. also if you can think of any other colleges i should apply to that are not on this list that are similar and you think would be a good fit for me, let me know. also if there is anything else i could be doing in order to increase my chances of being accepted into a college or getting financial aid, please let me know. thanks.
..........
i also forgot to mention that i got a full academic scholarship to my high school, which costs over 20,000 dollars per year.
as far as majoring i´m really not sure. i´m only 17 years old. thinking along the lines of business or maybe some kind of doctor. but i´m not looking for a graduate school. just a good solid 4 year college that´s affordable for me.
I think you have a good chance at getting into many of these universities. The hardest ones are likely to be Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame and UNC-Chapel Hill (because you're from out of state), but you're still a strong candidate. Being able to do your summer job in Spanish when you're not a native speaker should definitely help you. The following schools on your list will meet 100% of your demonstrated financial need (per the FAFSA form) if they admit you:
Duke, Grinnell, Northwestern, Michigan and Notre Dame (and maybe Tulane and Kenyon, too). Some of the other schools may be able to offer merit scholarships to help defray your college costs. The U. of Missouri would be smart to offer you enough aid to keep you in state, but the U. of Iowa might be generous, too, to lure away a strong student.

Q. I have a 10 hr layover in mexico city, 6am-4pm. any suggestions for how to maximize this time? from chicago en route to panama, my hubby and i have this 10 hr layover in mexico city. it's our first trip to mexico city, but we are very experienced world travelers (been to about 40 countries on 5 continents.) our spanish is limited to basics, but we are resourceful. how can we maximize this block of time best (suggested itinerary)? we are considering a trip to teotihuacan and / or taking a tour bus. other ideas? how do we make this run like clockwork? rent a car, hire a bilingual guide, public transportation? we want to minimize hassles and see and understand as much as possible. we are middle-aged. my husband is a blond and will stand out as a gringo, so we don't want to be gouged or hassled. suggestions?
"Driving in mexico city is crazy..."
Do not rent a car, driving in Mexico city is crazy.
If you decide to go out, take into account at least 2 hours to go and 2 more to return, traffic can be horrible starting you won't believe it at 6 am.
So let's say you have 6 hours it's not enough to go to Teotihuacan since it's outside the city.
Maybe a ride through Paseo de la Reforma up downtown, downtown there are ruins too called Templo mayor, and many other attractions.

There are taxi booths inside the airport, and they have taxis you can trust, ask them for the tour and be next to your driver all the time when you go down to tour, in order to go back with him as well. Do not carry fancy jewlery or cameras, do not look lost but confident, keep your documents and money right next to your body.
Of course it's your call, I was told in New York not to leave Newark as I had like 4 hours only and still I did and I had to run to catch the connection, it's always a risk.

Q. The panama canal? should the us take over the panama canal again in the interests of security ?
although the canal is run better now than when it was under us control, it is more vulnerable to attack.
no disrespect to any panamanians, but the country has no armed forces (as the generals tended to seize power all the time).
the us helped build the canal so it perhaps rightfully ours anyway, and the best way to protect us property is to station us troops there.
"The world can do to keep the panama canal safe is to strenghten democracy..."
Everytime I hear a comment like your I get fired up. Can you honestly think as a schooled individual that the only solution to the security issues is to station troops and hold a nation hostage again, just because you feel it will make it safer?
Ever since WWII it was proven by the US Military that the Panama Canal was vulnerable by air, and that there was no precise way to properly defend an air attack. So basically troops are only good for a conventional ground invasion. If we consider that now a terrorist technique would be used, then exploding a vessel in one or in all the locks would also be undefendable.
As for the treaty, well as someone properly said it was the Carter adminstration that decided to renegotiate and grant the adminstration to the Panamanian Government on December 31, 1999 at noon. However the defence of the Panama Canal has always been a duty for all the nations that signed the Neutrality Treaty of the Panama Canal, including the United States.
Oh by the way, the Panama Canal Treaties are 3:
1. The Panama Canal Treaty (Adminstration of the waterway)
2. The Neutrality Treaty (States that the Panama Canal is neutral during wartime - this is an ongoing treaty)
3. The Status of Forces Agreement (ran out on December 31, 1999 as the remaining US Armed Forces left Panama)
Sincerely the best the world can do to keep the Panama Canal safe is to strenghten democracy in Panama, help the Panamanian economy to flourish in such a way that its inhabitants are comfortable with their economical status to minimize social uprisings, and to keep Panama out of armed conflicts as a neutral country in every circumstance.
And if you're wondering, yes I'm Panamanian, yes I was schooled in the US, yes I've traveled a lot and have been in contact with different cultures, and yes one of my studies as an attorney was International Law, more specifically the Panama Canal Treaties.

Q. What am i suppose to expect when traveling abroad to panama? what should i pack/ what type of clothes should i bring?
(are tank tops, t-shirts, and shorts alright?)
will i be viewed as a spoiled american if i bring my laptop?
what is the diet like over there?
what to teenagers to in their spare time?
also if you have studied abroad there or in any other central american country, what is the best way to manage ur spending $$? (credit card, traveler's checks, etc)
srry this is a loaded question but i'm really curious ^_^
thanks
i forgot to mention, i would be staying there for 6 months through afs :)
"But not in panama city..."
Panamanians don't wear a lot of shorts. It is how we can tell gringos, they do. You can wear T-shirts, Tank tops and shorts on the beach and in Bocas del Toro, but not in Panama City, the capital.
Bring your Laptop, there are plenty of WiFi zones where you can use it to check your email.
We have little restaurants called Fondas. They serve baked chicken & rice, salad and Patacones (slices of fried green Plantains) for about $2.75. That's the most typical meal. Rice is eaten a lot! The food is good, safe and cheap. They will also serve stew and fried chicken sometimes fish. At the more upscale restaurants you will find Cerviche, bits of raw fish "cooked" in fresh Lime juice and spiced with onion. Everybody eats that, it is quite good too.
The city has a lot of ethnic restaurants with Chinese being the most prevalent as it is the largest group of immigrants. There are a lot of the fast food restaurants from the USA whose names you will know immediately. And there's good local Pizza in several Panamanian chains. One nice thing is that restaurants here will deliver to your front door, not just pizza but their entire menu. They have motor scooters and take food all over town.
Teenagers hang out at the malls. There are a lot of them. Albrook is the most popular and the largest. Then there is MuliPlaza and MultiCentro. These malls all have food courts and they have movies and the latest films are about $4. Or they go to the beach,
Bring your Debit card. Don't use Traveler's checks, nobody does and they will really slow you down IF they will be accepted at all. Most don't these days. ATMs are everywhere. And we use American currency.
Panama is very safe, so you can really enjoy your trip here.
Somebody mentioned Hurricanes, That's B.S. We don't get Hurricanes here!
I live in Panama.

Q. Central american project? central american portfolio project
where would you like to travel in central american? why?
imagine you have been offered a two week-long trip, all expenses paid, to central
america. will you visit historical sites? go on an ecotourism tour? live with a local
family? learn a local craft? which cities and towns will you visit?
there are only two conditions for your visit.
1. you cannot spend your time at resorts! rather, you must go to areas where you
can learn about the culture, daily life, and history of the region.
2. you must submit an itinerary for how you will spend your time as well as a
persuasive essay on why your trip is of educational value. your itinerary and
essay must account for 14 days of travel and explain why you chose each item on
your itinerary.
description
for this project, you will write a 14 day itinerary for a trip to central america as well as a
persuasive essay on why your trip is of education value
your portfolio assignment has 4 steps:
researching central america
analyzing your research
making an itinerary
writing a persuausive essay
an itinerary is a list of places to be visited. here is an example of a partial itinerary for
mexico. (note: mexico is considered a part of north america, not central america.)
sample partial itinerary
day 1: fly into mexico city. ride a trolley from the north end of the city to the south
end. this will help me to orient myself to the city while adjusting to the high altitude of
mexico city.
day 2: eat a local breakfast of tamales and atole from a street vendor. visit the meseo
nacional de antropologia. this museum will give me the background to understand and
appreciate the aztec and mayan sites i will visit later in my trip. visit a local family for
a traditional mexican dinner. the international house can help me find a family.
day 3: take a walking tour of the centro historico, including aztec ruins and a 16th
century cathedral. i am interested in seeing this part of the city since i learned about
aztec and spanish colonial history in social studies class.
© 2009 connections academy, llc. all rights reserved
day 4: go to the centro cultural tepeticpac tlahtolcalli to learn about heuheutl drum
playing. i play drums at home and am interested in learning how to play these indigenous
drums.
day 5: spend a quiet day in the park. many mexicans go to the chapultepec park on
sundays, so i will be able to learn more about mexican culture while taking a day of rest.
day 6: travel to the teotihuacan pyramids.
day 7: leave mexico city and travel to cardenas. from there i will travel to the mayan
ruins in southern mexico.
step 1: research
research the destinations of your choice. you may choose to stay in one central
american country or visit several countries throughout the region.
the countries of central america:
• belize
• costa rica
• el salvador
• guatemala
• honduras
• nicaragua
• panama
you will need to find all of the following information to complete your itinerary and
essay :
• key attractions you would like to visit
• activities you would like to do
• local food you would like to eat
• cultural events you would like to see (music, dance, festivals, etc.)
you can use note cards, type your notes on the computer, or use some other method of
note taking.
there are many sources of information about central america, including your textbook,
discovery education™, and grolier online® (linked from your lms home page). below
is a list of other resources:
• many countries’ governments run tourism web sites
• weather web sites can help you decide the best time to travel
step 2: research analysis
© 2009 connections academy, llc. all rights reserved
before you write your itinerary and essay, reflect on the information you learned while
researching your trip. write down your thoughts on the following questions; you will
need the answers to complete your itinerary and essay.
• what are your top priorities? is it a specific country or region?
• is there a theme to your travel, such as music, food, or historical sites?
• what is the educational value of the places you chose?
• why will you enjoy visiting the places you chose?
step 3: itinerary
now, make your itinerary for your proposed trip! be sure to address the following issues
in your final itinerary:
• how are you using your time? think about how long it will take you to visit
certain places, travel, attend performances, etc.
• how will you get from place to place?
• your itinerary should last 14 days, with day 1 as your arrival and day 14 as
your departure. you do not have to arrive and depart from the same city.
part 4: writing a persuasive essay
write a short essay to persuade the funders that your trip is of educational value to you.
make sure to address the following issues in your final itinerary:
• why your trip is of education value
• why the trip is a good match for your specific interests
• why your tri
What's your question? You want someone to just do the whole project for you? Hahahahhaa.

Q. Today the question came up at work, who were america's best presidents? here are my four that i consider great and why.
1. washington, he declined the offer of the presidency for life, and without him, there wouldn't have been a number two.
2. fdr, most of us have no conception of how encompassing, the great depression really was. he got us going again, he gave america hope again. he was the only four term president, twice elected during war-time.
3. lincoln, for healing the country after the civil war. in his own words, he did not think blacks were the equals of whites, for that he's third.
4. teddy roosevelt, the trust buster, the force behind the panama canal, a conservationist.
here's a link to the top ten. see how your picks rank and learn a few other facts in the process.

JFK
FDR
Teddy Roosevelt
Lincoln

Q. I am originally from panama-i met a guy from morocco, is he putting up a front? we met a couple days ago, i left my gate card at home, which i never do. after i got out of my car we spoke for one hour- i didnt realize time went by so quickly.
he lives in the same bldg, different corridor. and we work for the same company. he told me he saw me exactly 8 months ago and he knows where i normally park at work-so i know he noticed me.
he's smart, kind, and really handsome. our first date..we went to have tea. had a long walk on the beach & spoke 4 hours. then he showed me a house that he's buying and asked my opinion. by the end of the night we kissed(the best kiss i have ever had!!!!)...and he was asked me back to his apartment- which i found disrespectful in a way. i am just wondering if he was just being a man and wanting to hit it on first night. but i'm pretty sure that if i was a girl from his country he wouldn't have tried that with me.
First of all, having lived in Morocco, some guys will try that on the first night with Moroccan girls - just like American guys might try it with American girls - just depends on how ballsy the guy is.
As for asking you back to his apartment; you kissed him! If you kiss on a first date, then a lot of guys take that as an invitation to ASK you back. He didn't force you to do anything, but of course he wants some asap. Regardless, I think he was just being a man. You don't know how long he's lived outside of Morocco, do you? He may have a lot of experience with non-Moroccan women. Please don't assume that just because he's from that society he's going to act a certain way.
Anyhow, my husband is Moroccan and is totally sincere and wonderful, but not above doing something like that.

Q. Why is mexico the best in the concacaf region? this is an answer to davie darko, who for some reason blocked me. perhaps he is fearful of the truth?
i don't care much about points. i just want him to hear the truth.
humility, courage, and self confidence will help you grow as a person? i definitely agree with you, however if it's not very humble going around calling yourself "humble and courageous" is it, therefore that's hypocrisy.
sure the usa has defeated mexico, as has honduras, guatemala, el salvador, panama, and many, many countries in football. however, the paternity mexico has in the region is truly gargantuan. with all due respect to the rest of concacaf which has admirably grown over the years, they are simply not superior to mexico.
mexico has only missed out on a single world cup due to elimination (1982, jointly eliminated by honduras and el salvador), the united states was virtually nonexistent in world cup competitions from 1950-1990.
you, my friend, are obviously living in denial. you have great love for the us men's national team and that is admirable i must say. it is a good thing to see a fan struggle with his team in bad times and in good.
mexico is the united states arch nemesis, at least this has been the case for the past 10 years, historically speaking mexico's true regional rivals have been honduras, el salvador, and costa rica, because these three teams were the heavyweights alongside mexico in the region before the united states came about.
i have not heard rafa marquez claim what you say, so please provide a link, and if it is indeed true, forgive me for asking for this, however that's ignorant of himself. mexico has defeated the usa 5-0, 2-1 in the past two encounters.
additionally, mexico has actually won a juvenile world cup and a confederation's cup. the usa has nothing to claim but gold cups, and even mexico has more of those. so please keep your ignorant comments to yourself.
in mexico it's not as much about seeing your team as a capable rival but as a team that represents a country which stripped our people from our lands and continues expelling them from said lands.
i would like to add one more comment, before my conclusion. mexico has fielded much better players in history. your country has no youth movement
check out the answer i gave an ignorant mls fan on his league compared to the fmf
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=asypbmetfijmh2vzcctseqjsy6ix;_ylv=3?qid=20100331191114aaeoqly&show=7#profile-info-3glhdjdpaa
in conclusion. the us has no history. they aren't a bad team, but they aren't good either. honduras has better players in better teams in europe. i like them more because they actually play with tactic and not the infamous anti-futbol.
thoughts? concerns?
davie darko?
ignorance blinds you in a ridiculous manner.
sure there have been times in which the us has been playing better mexico. i'd say late 2007-2008. but as of now and historically speaking the usa is inferior to mexico.
oh and by the way, if you keep insisting otherwise, calling you stupid would be an insult to stupid people.
so don't call me an ignorant fool, i only talk about topics i understand.
good day.
He just hates it when they make fun of his NT.He knows everything your telling him is true so in that case he is just not paying attentions and keeps on saying that his NT is good.Maybe he is still happy that usa beat SPain in the Semifinals of the COnfederations cup but if they really were good they would have won the cup but they didn't they lost to Brasil. Mexico has won the COnfederation cup in 1999 something that can say "Mexico is better than usa".. Also usa is nothing when they play away games..I think he is just saying all that stuff cause usa managed to get ranked higher than Mexico by like 1 position. Still she is just a dumb little girl who blocks everybody
MEXICO ES EL PAPA DE LOS GRINGOS!
(a gift to el Davie Darko)
Mexico is just better and we have the players and the Cups to prove it
five CONCACAF Gold Cups
three CONCACAF Championships
one North American Nations Cup
two NAFC Championships
one FIFA Confederation Cup beating Brasil in the Final 4-3 you guys lost to them jajaja
