The country of Panama is GMT/UTC -5, with no Daylight Savings Time; relative to North America, the time difference will change over the year as a result.

Q. Is panama a country like america that eats foods quickly?
does panama take time preparing and eating food like some countries? or is it more like america and want everything fast fast fast? does anyonee knoww???

I live in the USA. We don't like things fast fast fast when it comes to food. I am an excellent cook (I learned from my Mom) and there are millions of excellent cooks here. I am sure the same can be said about any country. People love home cooked food. Peace.

Q. How long do i have to stay out of panama before returning into the country to re new visa?
we have to renew visa for panama. can i leave panama by land and return straight away back into panama. or do i have to stay out of country for a period of time?

The airlines normally give out visas for 5 bucks in which it is valid for 30 days. After that date, you are required to go to Immigration office and get an extention to your original visa. In short, you can stay for up to 60 days without leaving the country.

Q. Why is panama the only latin american country to participate in the west indian day parade (nyc)?
i've been to the west indian day parade in nyc a couple of times, and i've noticed that panama is the only latin american country to participate.

could be: Panama has lots of people of West Indian extraction. Many West Indians went there last century to help build the Panama Canal. Some of them stayed, intermarried, and produced families with bi-cultural identities.

Q. Is bocas del toro in panama ok to visit late july or will the weather be too rainy to enjoy beaches & parks?
this is our first time to panama. we will visit soberania park area near pan. city, but wanted to see another part of the country as well. we are avid birders. recommendations for other areas are welcome, interested in slightly cooler weather, hopefully not constant downpours.

Bocas is on the Rainy Side. It rains there almost everyday, even in the "Dry" season. The Smithsonian Institute has a research facility there and they give bird tours. I've put a link to their site below. For closer to Panama City birding, take the road to Gamboa and ask to get off at Pipe Line Rd. A stroll down that dirt road through the forest holds the record for most bird sightings in one day, over 500! You have to be very quiet and no talking or wearing bright colors. As you know, you see more the earlier you go. You might want to go to the drop line tourist attraction on the road to Gamboa. I've not done it, but it should be good. Also ask about the Smithsonian Institute Research Station at Barro Colorado Island, which is in the middle of Gatun Lake, the lake that was formed by damming of the Chagres River, when they built the canal. It is an amazing island. I've been there and walked the Pipeline Road too. They have tours to that island . I've attached a link to their website. You can call them and arrange a tour. Their pier is close to the Pipeline Road. One day a week, they share a lecture with anyone who wants to go. Its free. You can have dinner there and then listen to the lecture and take the ferry boat back to their pier. You could spend a whole day in Soberana Park, and a day on the Pipeline Road and one day on the Colorado Island. You will be risking the usual afternoon showers, They only last for about an hour and then back to the usual partly sunny skies. I've walked in Altos del Maria too. You will have to get permission and that might be difficult. But just to walk through the area will be an awesome day. It is very hilly and all up and down. Getting there and back will be difficult if you don't rent a car.

Q. Did any country ever attempt to cross the panama canal area instead of sailing around?
i don't mean in modern times. i'm talking 2/300 yrs or more? i'm trying to figure out why they always sailed around instead of using the land? i'm asking if anyone ever attempted it... thank you big buff! i mistakenly forgot about ownership. the royal road? i'll do some reading on that, interesting! isthmus! i forgot that word! thanks!

Spain did this but it was generally not done by them because the terrain was swampy and mountainous so you had to unload everything from the Carribiean boat and drag it accross swamps jungle and mountains then when you got to the pacific you needed to have a boat thier to haul your goods anyways eventually Spain made a road called Royal Road, although it was more commonly known as Camino de Cruces (Road of the Crosses) because of the abundance of gravesites along the way. Other countries didnt do this because it was Spains territory

Q. Which country has better hookers, panama or costa rica?
i'm headed south for some r&r and am wondering where to spend more time.

Panama wil be a lot cheaper. In the areas where the "decent" hookers are working you will be safer in Panama. You chances of picking up amateurs is better in Costa RIca but that really means you will be paying more to avoid a clear cut billing, you will be paying through your nose to avoid admitting what you are doing.

Q. I'm looking to buy land in panama and wanted to know what to really look out for and what areas are safest?
i've been researching in buying property in panama for quite some time now and decided to go visit the country in spring-08. the cities i'm currently interested in are boca del toro santa clara/farallon, punta paitilla, casco viejo, and costa del este. i'm looking for either land or a penthouse condo both located close to shopping, restaurants, and contain amazing ocean views. the area must have a very low crime rate and have economic growth and stability. i do not want to spend more than $70k for land, $200k for apartment. i want to meet up with reputable real estate brokers that can help assist with the showing of properties and who can also assist with the real estate process from start to end. this broker must have strong relationships with lenders and lawyers. finally, i need to know if anyone has bought land/property recently who would like to share their experiences with me. thank you! i'm a young professional of 27 years old who is interested in areas within panama with younger demographic scenes roughly within the 20-35 year-old scenes.

Q. If you've seen most of central america, what was your favorite country?
i'm going with my family for christmas this year but only have time/ energy to do one country. what do you suggest and why? panama, costa rica, nicaragua, honduras, el salvador, guatemala, belize? any place i should avoid?

I've been to Belize, Guatemala, and Costa Rica. Belize was my favorite, and here's a bit about my last trip: We split our time between the islands & inland. We spent a few days on Caye Caulker, and a few days in San Ignacio. Caye Caulker is an amazing little laid back island, many of the buildings have sand floors and you can eat all meals in your swimsuit if you want :-) There are guided snorkle and dive trips that leave from the Caye. We stayed at the Rainbow Hotel, which was pretty basic, cheap and clean. Some people choose Ambergis Caye for the island portion of their vacation, but it is a little more "commercialized" than Caye Caulker. I personally feel you get a better island experience at Caye Caulker. San Ignacio however, was my favorite few days of the trip. There are amazing Mayan ruins nearby to see. We stayed at the Maya Mountain Lodge. They were able to arrange day trips for us from canoing down the Mopan River, to go swim at the Blue Hole National Park (different than the blue hole dive area off the coast). They arranged transportation from the airport for us, so we didn't even need to rent a car. We did one overnight trip into Guatemala to the Tikal National Park. (A bus takes you there, and it was very easy.) It was one of the most amazing things I have ever experienced. We climbed to the top of one of the temples before sunrise, and watched the sun come up through the mists over the tree canopy. We could see the tops of the other temples rising above the mist and hear the howler monkeys in the trees around us. Also, the food was AWESOME everywhere we went, and we didn't have to be too careful about what we ate (like you might have to in Mexico), just watched the water we drank in public places (bought bottled). The people in Belize are all english speaking, and very friendly. Hope this info helps!

Q. Is it safe to travel outside of the country in your second trimester?
i understand the best time to travel while pregnant is during your second trimester. in fact, what to expect when you're expecting recommends it. we had been thinking of a trip to panama before we found out we were pregnant, do you think that going to panama will still be safe, or should we keep our vacation within the country?

Some airlines won't fly you if you're over six months, so check with the carrier first.

Q. For a single male, which place is better to go to meet women and party, boca chica, dr or panama city, panama?
i've been to boca chica several times and love it there, but was thinking of broadening my horizons and trying a different country. i would go to panama city in a heartbeat but the only problem is there is no beach which is walking distance to panama city. i would have to take a cab for an hour and who the the heck wants to do that. in boca chica, the beach is right there. what should i do?

The best place for a guy like you to meet other successful, handsome dudes, is probably Jersey. I know, most people think San Fran right away but Jersey is like a goldmine for gay Guidos. Once you get past the Guido's rough exterior and adornment of jewelry, you'll find young men that want nothing more than to be loved and taken care of. Their loyalty makes the best kind of lover!
