| Altos del Maria is a mountain valley community set high in the crags of the Cordillero Central, Panama's central mountain range. Beginning at 1600 feet of altitude, the 'Maria Heights' (named for the Maria river that winds through the valley) is a big sky retreat from the hot and humid lowlands, offering fresh spring temperatures year-round, clear starry nights, and views onto two oceans.
The sprawling, gated project sits on the slopes of the Cerro Picacho on the border of the Panama and Coclé provinces, only 90 minutes from Panama City on smoothly paved roads. Here the land rises suddenly from the coast, providing a dramatic transition from white sand beaches to alpine aeries. Mountain dwellers can sprawl before blue waters with just a 30 minute drive, on some of the finest beaches on the Pacific coast, including Playas Coronado, Chame and Gorgona.
Despite the seclusion and tranquility of the community, all modern conveniences are found on-site, including high speed internet, cellphone and landline service, Direct TV, and even a heliport. At least three nearby golf courses are available for the serious and leisure player, as are supermarkets, restaurants, plant nurseries, and all the amenities of Panama City.
The dramatic landscape of Altos del Maria offers many microclimates, ranging from cool to pleasant, with low humidity; most residents find no need for air conditioners, and some even find use for the luxury (by tropical standards) of a fireplace on brisk evenings. The dry air allows for clear sight of the sweeping vistas, and from the highest points, up to 3300 feet, the views open onto both the Pacific and Caribbean oceans.
The settlement has become popular among a multitude of nationals and foreigners from all walks of life, and developers has put a focus on maintaining healthy green zones, with a massive reforestation project of 1.5 million pine trees. Flowers bloom riotously in the fresh, rich soil, making it a gardener's dream.
The nearby Campana National Park also houses some of the region's diverse plant and wildlife, including the beautiful Golden Frog and hundreds of colorful bird and butterfly species. Waterfalls, creeks and rivers spill across the hilly terrain, and numerous trails and hanging bridges make for pleasant forays into the tranquil countryside.
Altos del Maria is also located very near to another popular expatriate community, El Valle in the adjacent Coclé province. |
